Elon Musk has made an announcement regarding a valuable new benefit for Twitter Blue subscribers. The social media platform now allows its paid users to upload videos of up to two hours in length, with a file size limit of 8GB. Additionally, the iOS app now supports longer video uploads. However, it’s important to note that the video quality is still limited to 1080p resolution.
This change aligns with Twitter’s efforts to enhance the platform’s appeal to both creators and users. Musk has consistently expressed his vision for a “new Twitter” referred to as X, an all-encompassing app. This vision was emphasized when he announced Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of the company last week. In recent months, the social network has taken significant steps towards realizing this goal, especially after Musk’s notable acquisition of the platform for $44 billion.
In December of the previous year, Twitter expanded the maximum duration for video uploads from ten minutes to one hour. They also introduced the ability to upload video files up to 2GB, quadrupling the previous file size limit of 512MB. Furthermore, the in-app media player received various enhancements, including playback-speed controls to match those commonly found on similar platforms. Currently, the duration limit for videos has been doubled, and the file size limit has been increased fourfold, specifically for Twitter Blue subscribers.
Unfortunately, Twitter has not yet introduced support for higher-resolution videos, as they still only allow uploads at 1080p resolution. It is hoped that the company is actively working on raising the resolution cap in the future. On a positive note, users can now upload longer videos using the iOS app, whereas previously, this feature was only available on the Twitter web version. It is anticipated that this capability will soon extend to the Android app as well. Importantly, the ability to watch longer videos is available across all platforms, and a Twitter Blue subscription is not required.
In addition to the extended video upload feature, Twitter Blue subscribers enjoy various other benefits, including a verified checkmark, the ability to edit tweets with up to 10,000 characters, text formatting options, two-factor authentication via SMS, reduced advertisement exposure, and more. Recently, the company also introduced encrypted messaging, although it currently only encrypts one-on-one conversations and does not synchronize encrypted messages across multiple devices.
Twitter plans to further enhance encryption and other newly-added features in the coming months. Elon Musk has announced his intention to focus on the technical aspects of the platform, such as software and system operations, once Linda Yaccarino assumes the role of CEO. Yaccarino is likely to oversee Twitter’s business operations. Only time will reveal how the company evolves under this shared leadership approach.
